We run the single wheels and they say these types flow trash better. Once they get worn down it will plug in heavy stalks. The front discs need to be not that worn down if you want to do one-pass in corn stalks. Thus a 9 shank model should be easier on the frame than an 13. Basically the same frame for a 9 shank, 11 shank or 13 shank (they just add extensions on the sides to add 2 more for an 11 and 2 more again for a 13. You don't want to hang a lot off the rear of the unit or else you will put to much stress on the frame. If you try to run to fast it may start bouncing a bit. Never had a problem with it staying in the ground except for one year in heavy clay soil that was very dry and compacted. I've run a 9 shank earlier and now run an 11 shank. Built to be run as a chisel and not as a deep ripper. The 714 is not a bad disc-chisel, but not the heaviest built one. They are supposed to be 20' when new and I've seen them wore down significantly. The early Tru-Depth had a smaller bolt through the spring and these were prone to breaking (early ones were 3/4' and the later ones were 7/8' ).Ĭheck the disk diameter. I have one with the Tru-Depth shanks (horizontal spring ). But there are several designs (standard shank and Tru-Depth shank ). Only problem with these shovels is once they are flipped the bolts start to loosen occasionally I believe because the shovels start flattening out.

If pick front blades up it will go in any hard ground. Have a 9 shank run 4' concave twisted cupped shovels.

Alot of guys around here have gotten rid of them too a differant color or ripper. I would look at a Wilrich or a Landoll If I were you but that's you call. Cousin has the same 1 & has the same issues i'm having so it's not just me. I wanted too weight it down years ago & the JD dealer said no you are going too break it on the frame were the weights go. They are a hoppy hop on heavy ground bounce up & down. I have a 13 shank & use it on rockier ground & backup if I get behind on ripping. I would look for something more heavier built if I were you. Was wondering how they we'll they stay in the ground. Looking at updating our old IH 6000 disc chisel.
